Curriculum Snapshot:

Phonics

Bradley Phonics program

Harcourt Brace Reading/Phonics workbook

The phonics program utilizes visual, oral, written, and auditory methods to introduce individual sounds and blends.  Through the use of daily use of letter/sound cards, students pronounce and write corresponding letters and words.  Sentence dictation is used to give words meaning and structure.


Reading

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishing

Children are taught through a variety of methods in order to meet individual learning styles.  Reading groups focus on decoding words phonetically, sight word recognition, picture clues, listening skills, comprehension skills, and independent extensions.


Grammar

Multisensory Grammar and Written Composition Harcourt Language

Children are taught grammar through a multi-sensory approach.  Grammar lessons focus on the identification of parts of speech and sentence structure.


Writing

Handwriting Without Tears

Children write daily in their journal.  Proper letter formation of upper and lower case letters are taught on a daily basis in order to gain mastery.  Children are encouraged to write creatively about various topics and personal experiences.  


Math

Singapore Math

The math program is designed to teach math using a hands-on approach and strives to connect math to “real world” problems.


Science and Social Studies

The Science and Social Studies curriculum includes observation, research, exploration, discovery, and experimentation.

Ocean

Objectives:

Define ocean, identify 5 oceans, habitats, zones, Compare/contrast traits of whale vs.shark, identify life cycle of a sea turtle, explain ocean food chain, explore water cycle, research ocean life, research/report on specific ocean creature

Read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea:  compare and contrast the movie/create a line plot based on comparison

Owls

Objectives:

Identify Owl/parts of owl, research/report on specific owls, explore owl food chain, dissect owl pellets, define types of vores

Read Hoot:  Compare and contrast book vs. movie/ create a line plot based on comparison

Thanksgiving

Objectives:  

Define Pilgrim/Indian, identify differences , culture, food, lifestyle, explore the Mayflower and identify parts of the ship, compare and contrast Wild vs. Domestic turkey

Christmas

Objectives:

Explore various types of Christmas tree found in the U.S., locate popular state suppliers on a map of the U.S., research/report aspects of a particular type of tree

Read A Christmas Story: compare and contrast book vs. movie/create a line plot based on comparison


Space

Objectives:

Identify planets and characteristics of each, explore characteristics of the sun, order planets, identify Moon and cyclical phases, define various terms associated with the Solar System, research various constellations and Greek mythology associated with each, mnemonic sentences, paint space depictions, Moon research journal, constellation presentation


Easter

Objective:

Complete various Language Activities based on the book Rechenka’s Egg

Make Ukranian Eggs


Wetlands

Objectives:

Define wetlands, identify 4 types of wetlands, explore characteristics of wetland soil, research various animals and plants found in each wetland environment, investigate/dissect a cattail, identify the life cycle of a frog
