Visiting Artist Jenny Day Hosts Exclusive Student Workshop at Coast Episcopal School

Coast Episcopal School Offers Two-Day Class by Visiting Artist Jenny Day

Elementary students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades have the opportunity to work with and learn from acclaimed artist Jenny Day, whose works in painting and sculpture are featured in galleries around the world.  On Thursday and Friday, January 16 and 17, Ms. Day will be offering a two-day, air dry clay workshop for up to ten students at Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach, one of seven after school enrichment Lagniappe classes being offered at the independent school from January 17-February 28.

Day’s two-day session at Coast Episcopal School will result in students creating whimsical pieces to be featured at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Table, a highlight of another GKAC show, “Paper Fools”, which will open on March 28 and run through May 9th.  “Paper Fools” marks its third iteration at the GKAC, with this year’s invitational show celebrating the 160th publishing anniversary of Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

Traveling from her home in Sante Fe, New Mexico through the generosity of The Arts Hancock County, Ms. Day will touch the MS Gulf Coast art community in a variety of ways.  She is offering a second two-day, mixed media sculpture workshop for adults on Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19th, at The Arts, Hancock Countyin Bay Saint Louis. Additionally, Ms. Day’s paintings and sculptures, along with works by Biloxi Artist Carmen Lugo and Bay Saint Louis Artist Ann Madden, will be on display and available for purchase at a six-week show, Sweet Dreams are Made of This, at the Gail Keenan Art Center on the campus of Coast Episcopal School, January 17 – February 28.

Ms. Day has an MFA in Painting from the University of Arizona, a BFA in Painting from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz.  Her work is exhibited at Arte Laguna, Venice, Italy; Czong Institute for Contemporary Art, Korea; Museum of Art Fort Collins, CO; Mesa Arts Museum and Phoenix Art Museum, AZ; Blue Star Contemporary Museum in San Antonio, TX; Alabama Contemporary Art Museum, Mobile, AL; and Elmhurst Art Museum located in DuPage County, just west of Chicago. Sweet Dreams are Made of This art show at GKAC will hold a complimentary opening reception on Friday, January 17 from 5 – 7 pm.

The Gail Keenan Art Center was dedicated in February 2011 to the memory of the recognized ceramic artist and printmaker who was born in 1940 in New Orleans and passed away in February 2005.  Ms. Keenan’s ties to the MS Gulf Coast were strong throughout her lifetime, during which she had works exhibited in Santa Cruz, CA; New Orleans, LA; Chicago, IL; Kansas City, KA; Ocean Springs, MS; Camden, ME; and Boston, MA, Ms. Keenan’s love for the arts continues to be honored in the works created and exhibited in the Coast Episcopal School signature art center.
